Assignments

Important: Your assignments are evaluated by a qualified instructor, not a computer program. We use extended response assignments to best evaluate comprehension of the concepts and principles presented in the course. Each assignment requires a response that indicates you've read and comprehend the material. To make sure you do not receive an "incomplete" from the instructor make sure you:

  • Read the assignment carefully! Circle key words.
  • Do not copy/paste information from the text. Use your own words.
  • Do not skip an assignment. That's an automatic incomplete.
  • Do not submit a list when a discussion or description is required
  • Do not submit a one-word or short-phrase answer. Give it some thought.
  • Do not submit a "one-liner" response when a discussion, summary, or description is required

More tips on completing assignments.

Assignment 1

Describe each of the five basic employer/supervisor safety responsibilities discussed in the course. Give an example showing how a supervisor can demonstrate each responsibility.

Assignment 2

Discuss various engineering and management control strategies you could use to eliminate or reduce the risk of injury to employees continually lifting 120 pound bags of grain.

Assignment 3

You're the new safety manager at XYZ Inc. Analyze the following scenario and describe what you believe would be appropriate actions to recommend to the employer.

Warehouse Rodeo

As a result of an Oregon OSHA accident investigation of a serious accident, XYZ, Inc. was awarded substantial penalties for violations of safety rules.

During the investigation, the compliance officer learned that the injury occurred while two forklift drivers were engaging in horseplay. The two employees were playing the usual game of “warehouse rodeo” during lunch when the accident occurred. When confronted on the matter, Dale, the warehouse supervisor complained that he had “told those guys a number of times over the last year not to play that game.” Other warehouse employees stated that the game was a common occurrence, but played only during lunch. Upon further research, the employer representative could not locate a written policy statement regarding accountability. The employer was also unable to produce any written evidence that safety rules were being enforced.
