> How to find the ones you can use
Compliance is all about following rules. But what if you don’t know which ones to comply with? Three suggestions:
- Do a hazard assessment. What kinds of hazards does your workplace have? Look at work processes, equipment, and facilities to find hazards. When you know what your hazards are, it’s easier to determine which rules you need to follow.
- Request an Oregon OSHA consultation. Our safety and health consultants can help you identify workplace hazards and show you the rules you need to know to keep your workplace safe. Refer to our online Consultation Request Form.
- Ask your insurance carrier for help. Your carrier can explain the rules that apply to your workplace and work with you to develop a safety and health program.
Many of our rules have requirements for special programs, recordkeeping, training, respiratory protection, and medical monitoring. We have a guide that lists those rules. It can help you determine which of these requirements applies to you workplace.

Our rules are organized in six divisions. Your industry determines your division:
- Division 1: includes rules that apply to most employers.
- Division 2: includes rules that apply to most employers – except construction, agriculture, and forest activities.
- Division 3: includes rules that apply to most construction employers.
- Division 4: includes rules that apply to most agricultural employers.
- Division 5: includes rules that apply to shipyards, marine terminals, and longshoring. Federal OSHA enforces those rules.
- Division 7: includes rules that apply to forest activities employers.
